A chopped strand reinforcing
material composed of chopped fiberglass of various lengths randomly dispersed
to provide equal distribution in all directions, held together by a resin soluble
binder. Chopped strand mat is commonly used in laminates due to ease of wet out, the good bond provided
between layers of woven roving or cloth and is comparatively low in cost. Chopped strand
mat is categorized by weight per square foot, has two feathered
edges and is sold by the running yard or in bulk by
the kilogram in full rolls. Please contact us for a quote on full
rolls.

E-Glass cloth is
woven from fine yarns of twist and ply construction with the actual glass being a
lime-alumina borosilicate glass of low alkali content. This glass composition offers ample
flexural and tensile strengths, high chemical stability and high moisture resistance.
The cloth weave allows it to conform to curved surfaces with minimum fitting.
E-Glass cloth if categorized by weight per square yard and is sold by the running yard. An
E-Glass cloth tape with finished edges is also available and is sold by the running yard
of in bulk by the 50 yard roll.

Woven Roving is strands of glass fiber
grouped together to form a twisted yarn. The roving is then woven into a coarse, square,
lattice-type open weave to form the material. Woven roving provides great tensile and
flexural strengths and a fast laminate buildup at a reasonable cost. It is more difficult
to wet out than chopped strand mat or cloth however, and because of the coarse weave, it
is not used where surface appearance is important. A layer of chopped strand mat is used
between each layer of roving to fill the coarse weave when more than one layer is
required. Woven roving is categorized by weight
per sq. yd. and is sold by the running yard
or in bulk by the kilogram.

Surface mat is
manufactured similar in appearance to the chopped strand mat but is much finer. it is
composed of fine fiberglass strands of various lengths randomly dispersed in all
directions held together by a resin soluble
binder. This material is used to provide a
resin-rich layer in liquid or chemical holding tanks, or as a reinforcement for layers of
gelcoat. This material is sold by the running yard or in bulk by the 250 meter roll.

NEMPC or Knytex is
a fiberglass composite composed of 17 oz. biaxial (± 45deg) unwoven roving stitched fabric
incorporating a 3/4 oz. chopped strand mat stitched to one side of the fabric. NEMPC is used where optimum strength and stiffness, particularly in corners and angles, is
critical. The material is categorized by weight per sq. yd. (17.08 oz.) and is sold by the
running yard or in bulk by the kilogram. Also available is a 1200
EBX ± 45 deg with no mat on the back.

S-Glass Cloth is
manufactured similarly to E-Glass Cloth, but with a different sizing (coating). Thus,
S-Glass Cloth is stronger and tougher that E-Glass Cloth and has 20% greater tensile
strength. S-Glass Cloth provides a premium multi-stage finish and has the highest impact
strength of all fiberglass materials. This material is categorized by weight per sq. yd.
and is sold by the running yard or in bulk by the 125 yard roll.

Carbon Fiber is a
graphite fabric especially designed for use in laminates which have critical requirements
for maximum stiffness, extremely high tensile (3 times that of steel) and comprehensive (5
times that of steel) strengths, with low weight. Its main function is local reinforcement
to improve the strength to weight ratio of highly stressed parts. Carbon fiber is weak in
shear strength and impact resistance and should be shielded
from abrasion with fiberglass or other materials, such as Kevlar®. This material is categorized by
weight per sq. yd. and is sold by the running yard.

Kevlar® is a high
strength (5 times that of steel), high modulus (75% of carbon fiber) aramid fiber. Aramid
is technically an aromatic polyamide, which is a complex hydrocarbon and a distant cousin
of nylon. Kevlar® is the most impact resistant fiber on the market, also
exhibits the highest tensile strength and highest resistance
to damage, vibration and crack propagation. However, Kevlar® has very low compressive strength, so it
is recommended that laminates carrying bending or compression loads have carbon fiber
incorporated into the laminate to provide adequate stiffness. Kevlar® is
also hygroscopic, ultra violet sensitive and un-sandable, thus it is not recommended
as a sheathing or outer ply of the laminate. Kevlar® is categorized by
weight per sq. yd., available in a cloth weave and sold by the running yard.
